Farmers' Markets and Local Economic Regeneration – Fact or Fantasy?:
Steve currently lives in South Riverside, a culturally diverse inner-city neighborhood of Cardiff. As Founding Director of RCMA Social Enterprise Ltd., Steve Garrett has steered the award-winning Riverside Market through its thirteen years of growth, and has directed various spin-off activities such as: setting up three other farmers markets in Cardiff; overseeing RCMA's education and outreach activities, such as the RCMA Community Allotment; writing the RCMA Urban Farmers' Market Toolkit; setting up the Riverside Community Food programme (which engages with local residents in encouraging them to eat fresh, local food); and helping develop the RCMA Market Garden project - a co-operatively owned social enterprise which produce fruit and vegetables and provide training in horticulture.
Steve was a founder member of Farmers Markets in Wales, sits on the South East Wales Agrifood Partnership, the Cardiff Food and Health Strategy Group, and was a member of the Food Standard Agency's Advisory Committee for Community Engagement. He is included in the 2009 Sustain Wales ‘Green List' of Welsh environmental activists, received an Inspire Wales Awards in 2010 and was shortlisted in the 2011 Leading Wales Awards. Steve has an MSC in Urban Agriculture, and is currently working with a Zimbabwean women's organisation in Cardiff to support a local food production/marketing cooperative in a village near Bulawayo.
Steve works as a Grant Advisor and Assessor for the Local Food programme and is a Skillshare Mentor with the Plunkett Foundation, . He is a Dynamo Role Model for Menter a Busnes, a mentor with the Social Enterprise Support Project at the Wales Co-operative Centre and is a contributing member of the F3 local food consultancy group.
