Friends and colleagues, Simon Hopkinson and Franco Taruschio, are two of the trail-blazers of the UK restaurant scene. While Simon opened Hilaire in 1983 and Terence Conran’s first restaurant Bibendum in 1987, Franco was carving an international reputation at The Walnut Tree, Abergavenny. Simon’s second career as a food-writer has proved equally successful. His first book Roast Chicken and Other Stories was recently voted ‘most useful cookery book of all time’. His latest book Week In Week Out draws on his much-loved column for The Independent from 1994 onwards.
