Changing British Food Culture

Friday 14 September 2007, 10.00am - 5.00pm
The Hill Education & Conference Centre,
Pen-y-Pound, Abergavenny

The Abergavenny Food Festival launches its first Conference sponsored by Miller Research UK Ltd.  The  topic is Growing Food Festivals/Changing British Food Culture - how our  food is produced, marketed and sold, what we  eat and how this  influences the countryside, rural livelihoods and the health of the nation. Come and debate with us and share your ideas, thoughts and initiatives at the Abergavenny Food Festival 'Big Food Debate'.

Who Should Attend?

The Conference is for people running Food Festivals, the organisations promoting them or thinking of setting up their own Festival, as well as people from different parts of the British food scene (producers, retailers, journalists and researchers) interested in promoting British food culture.

The Hill Education & Conference CentreAims and Objectives of the Conference

The aim is not only to discuss and share ideas, but also to identify practical ways for Food Festivals to:

  • Help create a Distinctive Local Food Culture in your Region
  • Become more Sustainable
  • Involve the  Community and contribute to the Local Economy
  • Have a positive impact on the wider British Food Culture

'The Big Food Debate' will be an opportunity to meet people who are running or supporting food festivals, as well as others concerned with the direction British food culture is going in, to make new contacts and broaden horizons.  It will be a serious event, but as with everything the Abergavenny Food Festival does, there will be an element of  fun and enjoyment.  You can also experience the ninth Abergavenny Food Festival which takes place the weekend of  the Conference.

Abergavenny Food Festival is the leading food festival in the UK.  It has been called: "the most democratic Food Festival, the most easy going and the most celebratory" (Mathew Fort, The Guardian Nov 2006). The Festival  has always been  interested in not only celebrating all aspects of good food and eating, but also in contributing to changing the way we see, appreciate and value our food.

The cost of attending 'The Big Food Debate' is £75.  This includes a FREE entry pass to the Abergavenny Food Festival on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September. Closing for Delegate Applications: Friday 31st August 2007. Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.
